My First Prenatal Doctor Appointment

Personal

My pregnancy journey felt official after I went to my first prenatal appointment. And let me say, it wasn’t really what I was expecting!

Taking the at home test was enough for me to get excited and all up in my feels about this little miracle growing inside of my belly. But those butterflies quickly turned into nerves as I had to wait several weeks before finally getting to go to our first prenatal appointment.

Suddenly I was nervous and I didn’t really know why. There is just so much unknown in these first few weeks and you are dreading hearing any news that isn’t good news.

I keep joking how my Mom genes must be kicking in already where I just worry about everything from this point on, until the day I die I guess. LOL

If you haven’t read any of my other pregnancy posts yet, I found out I was pregnant after taking an at home test on December 12, 2021. And when you find out you are pregnant the next step is to call your doctor and set up an appointment. What I didn’t realize is they do not take you in right away. Typically they wait until you are at about the 8 week mark or later.

So for 3 weeks I have just stared at that little pee stick and prayed that God would calm my nerves. I wanted so badly to hear that heartbeat and see that little bean on the ultrasound.

And after what felt like forever, the day finally came.

Key Points Of The Appointment

Date of appointment: January 4, 2022

  • Pap Smear
  • Ultrasound
  • Blood work
  • Given prescription for nausea
  • Given a packet of information for pregnancy
  • Told about genetic testing and when to find out the gender, etc.

Arriving To My Appointment

I was luckier than others, because Tyler, my husband, was allowed to come to my appointment with me. And I know for many mamas this isn’t always the case due to the weird world we live in right now.

When we arrived to the doctor’s office, we were given a stack of paperwork to fill out and sent to a private waiting room where we waited for about 30 minutes.

Eventually we were called back into the room where I had to pee in a cup, and change into a gown to prep for the procedures of the appointment. You know, that super awkward moment when you are sitting naked wrapped up in a sheet sitting on a table… good times.

My doctor asked a bunch of questions about past medical history and all the normal questions doctors usually ask you. From there, we got started on the fun stuff.

The Fun Part

The part where I go full spread eagle on a table and have a stranger looking at my lady bits. Oh yeah, fun times being a girl but I guess I better get used to it.

After my pap smear hoorah, it was time for the moment I had been waiting for. The ultrasound. I was so excited for this because I wasn’t even certain I was going to get one this early on in my pregnancy. So when I saw the machine I could have started crying right there.

What I wasn’t prepared for is for them to do the ultrasound vaginally… sorry if that’s TMI but it is what it is. I didn’t even really know that was a thing so boy oh boy what a journey that was.

But the awkwardness and embarrassment is very quickly dissolved and overcome with pure joy and happiness.

I got to hear the baby’s heartbeat. Something I did not know could make me so emotional, but I cried as soon as I heard a second of it.

It’s so wild to think that inside of my tummy is life. Another human is growing and my body is the one supporting it. How cool is that? I left that prenatal appointment feeling on top of the world, and at peace.

Advice I Have For Other New Moms

One of the biggest takeaways I have after my first prenatal appointment is how important it is to be comfortable with your doctor. It’s extremely awkward having someone all up in your business, so finding someone that makes you feel confident and at ease is key. If you are hesitant with the doctor you have, there is no shame in changing.

I always kinda felt stuck or like I had to stick with whoever I was assigned, but that is not the case. Try out a few if you need to! And see if your friends have anyone they recommend going to.
