Sarah Welk Baynum is an author of an Equestrian Romantic Suspense Novels / Book Series. In our conversation Sarah tells us the story of how she got into writing novels, the process that goes into self publishing your own book and then goes on to share a bit on her successes with marketing the books. She gives a lot on insight into the world of writing and is totally an open book (no pun intended)! I think you are going to find this episode inspiring and encouraging especially if you are someone who ever dreams of writing a book one day!

Writing Her Very First Book

When she first decided she was going to write a book, Sarah says it’s probably a good thing she did not realize how much work was truly going to go into the process. Because if she did, she may not have ever followed through with it.

To most people’s surprise, she was able to write her first book in 3 months. Outlining was a huge help in her process and knowing where she wanted the story to go from the beginning. But once the book was actually complete, that is where the real work began.

Self Publishing A Novel

Sarah says that it was relatively easy to publish her book on Amazon, but actually marketing the book and getting people to find it and purchase it was the bigger challenge. If you are a go-getter kind of person, self publishing could totally be for you. It takes more work but is definitely more budget friendly, where as going the more traditional route can get costly but is less work on your end as the writer.

Blending Two Passions Into One

One of my favorite things Sarah and I talked about during her interview was how cool it is to be able to blend two passions into one. Sarah, being the horse girl that she is, always wanted to make money within the horse industry. But she also has a big passion with writing. So when she thought of the idea to write a non fiction book about horses, she realized she had hit the jackpot of blending two of her biggest passions into one!

Similar to how I was actually able to create my whole photography business based on my love for taking photos of my own horses. Eventually that turned into wedding photography, and now branding photography.
