How To Pose Yourself

Ready to learn how to pose yourself more confidently? Or heck, even pose other people without the anxiety?

As a photographer, posing other people has been a part of my job for many years. But something that I feel really leveled up my client experience was when I started getting in front of the camera myself.

When you are able to understand how to pose yourself and understand what it feels like to be in front of the camera, it can not only make photos of yourself look better but also make your clients more confident in what you are having them do.

In this video, I bring you into my home where I teach you some tips to pose yourself better. Whether you are a business owner needing content, a photographer or even just someone who wants to take cuter candids, this video is for you!

Shift Your Weight

First let’s talk about the lower half of your body. The key to posing better starts with the legs. You typically never want to stand straight on facing the camera with your weight evenly distributed. Try dropping one hip down or slightly bending a knee. This will create a nice shape to your body and also make you look for feminine and casual.

I am also a big fan of standing on your toes for certain poses. Especially if you are doing a walking photo. My go to is telling people to walk on their toes like they are walking on a tight rope. One leg in front of the other. This is going to create a much more flattering position for your legs and body versus walking very squared up.

Bend Your Arms

If you take nothing else away from this post, remember this: if it bends, bend it. 99% of the time it is going to be a heck of a lot more flattering to bend your body instead of keeping everything really straight and tight.

There are so many ways you can get creative with bending your arms. Try things like touching your face, crossing your arms, hugging your body, or playing your fingers.

Keep your hands soft and loose for a feminine look to your photos.

Constantly Move

Movement is such an important component to taking better photos. When you are constantly moving, you are keeping your body loose and relaxed. They don’t have to be large movements but just subtle pose changes every few seconds. Work on changing your facial expressions, shifting your weight back and forth between your legs and doing different poses with your arms.

Practice

You know what they say.. practice makes perfect. Some of the best ways to get better at posing yourself is to practice in the mirror. Sure, you might feel weird at first but this is going to teach you what facial expressions you like on yourself and create muscle memory for when you do not have a mirror around.

You know your body better than anyone else, so work on finding the things you like on yourself and what you don’t. If you feel confident in a pose, it will automatically show in the photos.

Sit On The Ground

When in doubt, sit down! You can get really creative with poses when you are sitting on the ground. Bend your legs or lean into your knees. Even laying down can be a fun idea too!

Posing does not have to be some scary concept. The more you can get out and do it, the better you are going to feel. And trust me when I say, all your friends are going to LOVE having you take pictures with them if you know how to do all the cute pose ideas for Instagram.

Try out some of these tips and let me know which ones are your favorites!
