How To Move Your Following Across Platforms

Today, we are talking about how to move your following/audience across different platforms. This is actually a lot harder than it sounds. You might think all you have to do is pop on Instagram stories and say “hey guys I am on Tik Tok now, follow me over there too” but there is more than that. If you have tried this before, you may have gotten some people to move platforms but definitely not everyone.

Getting someone to get off of Instagram and move over to another app or open up youtube is challenging because they chose to be on Instagram in that particular moment for a reason. We have to make it sound like such a good opportunity they do not want to miss out on.

What if you don’t have any other platforms?

To that I say, you need to not be putting all your eggs into one basket my friend. Does that mean you need to go create a twitter account, facebook group, youtube channel, email list, podcast, blog, etc. this second? No of course not.

BUT we do want to choose at least one other platform besides Instagram to be on to have our followers with us. We do not own Instagram, which means those followers are not truly ours. That account you worked so hard to build and all those loyal fans you have could vanish overnight if Mark Zuckerberg decided he was over it.

And yes, this has happened before with other apps.

Start An Email List To Move Your Following

My recommendation would be to start an email list. Having email subscribers means that you can speak directly to your people whenever you want by jumping straight into their inbox. No fighting any pesky algorithm to be seen.

With email marketing you can relay the same message that you want on Instagram but instead of posting and hoping that people see it, you can guarantee it.

I know for a lot of people email marketing can feel funky. It seems outdated and not relevant but according to statistics that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Email marketing has stood the test of time. I mean emails have been around for such a long time, and they are still just as important today as they were YEARS ago.

My favorite part about email marketing is that I can serve my audience automatically. That’s right, I can create content one time and have it automatically cycle people through a workflow that could last 1 month, 4 months, 6 months, heck even a year. This way I know my people are getting value even when I am on vacation!

Instagram doesn’t let you do this! You have to post in real time and have to constantly be keeping up with the times. You have to be showing your face on stories, making Reels, taking cute photos for your feed, writing out a bunch of captions, and so on. It’s exhausting!

Flodesk

Hands down my favorite email marketing platform (and I have used several) is Flodesk. I never understood how to do email marketing effectively, but I did see the value in it, that is until Flodesk came along and changed everything.

This platform makes it so easy to get people on my email list, and start serving them right away. Plus, my emails can be super cute and on brand which is a big deal for me.

If you are curious, don’t just take my word for it, try Flodesk yourself. You can get a 7 day free trial and 50% off for life when you go to SarahElrod.com/Flodesk

Not kidding, it’s only $19 per month guys. Get it while you still can.

Move Your Following By Making It About Them

This is probably not a secret, but people are pretty selfish! Even when we try not to be it is just in our blood to naturally want to make things about ourselves.

So when you are trying to get people to move from one platform to another, we need to keep this in mind and flip the script on our audience.

If you say something like “make sure to go follow my podcast” basically just because I want you to, well, that’s not a very good incentive for them because how does that benefit that particular person?

But if you say “Subscribe to the podcast to get weekly marketing strategies that will help grow your ____ business” then you are giving them more of a reason to want to subscribe because they can see how it will benefit them.

Don’t make it come off like they owe it to you to follow you on different platforms. Your audience does not owe you any favors. We need to let them know that we are doing them a favor by sharing where they can get more value for the things they want.

Asking Followers To Leave Reviews

These same rules apply if you want someone to leave a review for your business. Asking someone to follow along on a different platform is one thing but asking someone to write out a review is even more work.

We need to make your audience see how it will actually benefit them to leave a review for you. You can say that if they take 2 minutes to write you a review it allows your business to grow and serve in bigger ways. You will be able to work with bigger people, and build more credibility with reviews.

Similar to a podcast. Asking y’all to write a review for this Podcast will help me help you. The more reviews this show gets, the more it will go up in the rankings, and the more credible this show will be so I can bring on big named guests to give y’all value.

Recap:

You really need to boost your Call to actions and make them super intentionally every time you ask your following to do something. Make sure they can see the benefit of what is in it for them.

And then also make sure you have other places for your audience to find you and follow you. I suggest and email list but you can also do a youtube channel, facebook, a blog, twitter, linked in, tik tok, and many others.

Start simple, and get consistent on bringing value across your platforms and once you feel like you have a good groove then you can start to expand onto other platforms as well.

You got this friend. I believe in you and as always I hope you have an amazing, magical day.
